Dear couple currently planning your wedding,

The Taylor Swift wedding is the only thing anyone’s talking about this week — Taylor and Travis got married last night at Madison Square Garden, in front of roughly a thousand guests, with Adam Sandler officiating. And here’s the funny thing — that’s almost all we actually know. We’ve seen guests arriving and leaving. A few carnival games at the reception. Nobody outside that room has actually seen Taylor or Travis: no confirmed photo of the dress, no real look at the room itself, just guesses, secondhand descriptions, and a couple of fake photos already debunked online.

And still, if you scroll your feed today, you’ll see almost every wedding vendor and planner posting about it anyway — recapping details nobody has confirmed, drawing “lessons” from a day none of us actually saw. I thought about doing the same thing. I decided not to.

Not because it wasn’t beautiful — from what little has genuinely surfaced, it sounds like it was. But because I don’t want you to think, even for a second, that your wedding needs to look anything like whatever that one turns out to have been, once the real story comes out.

So here’s what I actually want to say: it’s completely fine to be curious, and completely fine to love whatever you end up seeing once real photos surface. Take the parts that move you. Inspiration is a wonderful thing, and I will never tell a couple to ignore what lights them up.

But inspiration and imitation are two different things. One is a starting point. The other is a script you didn’t write.

Your wedding isn’t a smaller, quieter, or less-famous version of anyone else’s day. It isn’t a cottage version of a Madison Square Garden wedding, or a version of your cousin’s wedding, or a version of the last Pinterest board you saved. It’s yours. It gets to look like the two of you — your people, your idea of a good time, your definition of a perfect night.

So this week, as you inevitably see “everything we learned from the Taylor Swift wedding” posts everywhere — half of them guessing, most repeating the same three guest photos — take what’s useful, let go of the rest, and keep coming back to the only question that actually matters — what do the two of you want your day to feel like?
